Sophos XG Firewall: How to configure SSL VPN for macOS

The Sophos SSL VPN client enables BCNET staff to use computers and smartphones located away from BCNET offices, while still being able to send and receive data as if the devices were located in the office and directly connected to the BCNET network.

This article outlines the workflow for downloading and installing the Sophos SSL VPN client on macOS computers. For other operating systems, please refer to the following documentation:

  • Windows
  • Linux
    • The documentation refers specifically to Ubuntu, but can easily be modified for installation of the client upon other distros.

Workflow

  • Double-click the Tunnelblick icon to begin the installation. Click Continue when prompted, and enter your computer password when prompted.

  • Tunnelblick is now installed in the Applications folder.

  • From within an Internet browser, log into the Sophos user portal, located at https://smokey.bc.net/
    • Use firstname.lastname as your username, and your email password as your password. In the screenshot below, the person logging in is named Linda Zhu. Since their email address would be linda.zhu@bc.net, they log into the Sophos user portal with simply linda.zhu .

  • Download file from user portal Download Configuration for Other OSs in the .ovpn format.

  • Open the downloaded .ovpn file. Tunnelblick will install the SSL VPN configuration; enter your computer password when prompted.

  • Launch Tunnelblick by searching for the application.
  • Alternatively, double-click on the Tunnelblick icon in the top bar, and log in using the same credentials used to log into the Sophos user portal.

  • When the SSL VPN is connected, the Tunnelblick icon should appear as black (rather than gray) and hovering over it should indicate connection details.
